الشمس لا تغطى بغربال

لا تُغطّى الشَمسُ بِغُرْبَال

/la toghatta ash-shamso bi-ghorbal/

يستخدم هذا المثل عند محاولة البعض إخفاء أخطائهم بأعذارٍ واهية.

You cannot hide the sun with a sieve

This proverb is used when one tries to hide a clear mistake with a lame excuse.


A 'ghorbal' is a sieve with a bigger mesh size. It is used to make couscous from balls of wheat dough.

علمته الرماية فلما اشتد ساعده رماني

علَّمتُهُ الرِمَاية فَلمَّا اشْتدَّ
سَاعِدُهُ رَمَانِي

هذا المثل مأخوذ من قصيدة قديمة للشاعر معن بن أوس المزني من العصر الجاهلي. يستخدم هذا المثل للتعبير عن شخص علّمته شيئا فاستخدمه ضدك في أول فرصة سنحت له.

"I taught him how to throw [the bow]
and when he got stronger, he dealt [an arrow] at me."

This proverb is taken from an old poem by Ma'an Bin-Aws Al-Mazni, a pre-Islam poet. It is used against a person whom you given a skill and he used it against you the moment he had an opportunity.
